Demarcation Point

Regarding telephony and/or data circuits, the demarcation point is the point at which the service provider network ends and connects with the customer’s on-premises wiring. It is the dividing line which determines who is responsible for installation and maintenance of wiring and equipment, the customer/subscriber, or telephone company/service provider.

Demarcation point is sometimes abbreviated as demarc, DMARC, or similar. The term MPOE (minimum or main point of entry) is also used, with the added implication that it occurs as soon as possible upon entering the customer premises. A network interface device often serves as the demarcation point.

In most cases customers are responsible for extending telephony and/or data circuits from the demarcation point to their equipment which may be installed in their suite, in a server room, closet, or on a wall.

Typically carriers/service providers will only test up to the demarcation point. Past demarcation point it is up to the customer or their telephony/data vendor to test the circuit extension to their equipment.

Circuit extensions from the Demarcation point should only be installed or tested by companies that are licensed, insured, & bonded to perform Low Voltage cabling.

Are you using 100 year old or 20+ year old dial-tone technology ?

Analog Lines are 100+ Year Old Technology!

Analog Telephone Lines, also called Plain old telephone service (POTS) is voice-grade telephone service employing analog signal transmission over copper loops. POTS was the standard service offering from telephone companies from 1876 until 1988

POTS remains the basic form of residential and small business service connection to the telephone network in many parts of the world. The term reflects the technology that has been available since the introduction of the public telephone system in the late 19th century, in a form mostly unchanged despite the introduction of Touch-Tone dialing, electronic telephone exchanges and fiber-optic communication into the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

PRI’s are 20+ Year Old Technology!

The Primary Rate Interface (PRI) was first defined in 1988 and is still popular today with traditional service providers. PRI used to be the standard for providing telecommunication services to offices. It is based on the T-carrier (T1) line in the US.

Current Technology!

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking has been commercially available since the early 2000’s. SIP trunking is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) standard by which Cloud service providers deliver telephone services and unified communications to customers equipped with SIP capable telephone systems. (IP-PBX)

The architecture of SIP trunking provides a partitioning of the Unified Communications network into two different domains of expertise:

Private Domain: a VoIP solution created on the customer’s network.

Public Domain: a VoIP access solution to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in the Cloud

The interconnection between the two domains must occur through a SIP trunk.

What is SIP Trunking ?

With most phone companies (LEC’s & CLECs), customers typically pay on a per-line basis for physical phone lines that originate in their central office. These phone lines are costly. Customers invest a lot when they initially deploy them, and it’s very expensive to add more as they grow.

With SIP Trunking, phone calls are routed through the Internet. And this makes all the difference.

With SIP Trunking customers can:

  • Consolidate voice and data traffic
  • No longer need to pay for expensive phone lines from the phone company
  • Cut costs up to 50 percent
  • No loss in capacity to make and receive calls
  • No loss in the quality of calls
  • Improve the reliability of the system by mitigating threat of local outages

Most newer phone systems are compatible with SIP Trunking with no extra equipment.

Older phone systems may require a device called a VoIP Gateway to translate analog or digital calls into VoIP calls.

In all cases, SIP Trunking brings new life to an existing phone system or provides the savings catalyst to purchase a new phone system, while cutting operational costs and preserving capital.

Best of all, with SIP Trunking, customers can say goodbye to the old fashioned phone company forever.
