Video Surveillance for Home or Business

Everyone wants Video Surveillance, but where does one start?

Check around your home or business and confirm what you want to see, monitor, and/or record.  That should give you a good idea of how many cameras you need.

What type of system should you buy? Well, do you want high maintenance or low?  Do you want good picture quality? Do you want Alerts to movement or activity? Do you want Remote Viewing? How long do you want to Store video recordings? (storage = Money)

Installing a Video Surveillance system that utilizes Cloud Storage is going to consume a large amount of your internet access.  Streaming video over your internet to the cloud-based storage is a bandwidth killer.  Expect a slow network and even slower downloads.  Watching streaming television will become problematic.

Premise-Based Recording/Storage is available in Digital Video Recorders (DVR) or Network Video Recorders (NVR).  DVR = OLD technology!  It doesn’t matter that it’s a brand new system, if it’s a DVR it’s yesterday’s news. (DVRs) record over Analog Coax Cabling. NVR = New/Current Technology!  NVR’s record over CAT5e/CAT6 Cabling directly from your IP Cameras. (No network or internet access impact)

Remote Viewing is accomplished from a smartphone, tablet, or PC across the internet. It does not have to mean that you poke holes in your firewall/router and compromise the security of your local network.  If you don’t know how to do any of that, talk to people who do. (You will be using the internet access at your home during the period that you are remote viewing regardless of the type of system that you install)

Wired or Wireless Cameras? If you plan to use Wireless Cameras how are you going to power them? Are you going to pay an electrician to install a power outlet everywhere you want a Wireless camera? No, then I assume that you will be installing Battery Powered cameras, and that you plan to monitor the battery life and get up on a ladder to replace as needed(even when it’s dark, raining, or snowing, because that’s when batteries die, we all now that)

Would you buy a 1960’s black and white TV?  Then why would you buy a DVR with coax cable and analog cameras at 1080P resolution? You’ve seen the videos on TV from convenience store robberies with a screen full of snow and a shape moving around.

Buy a Network Video Recorder (NVR) and Wired IP Cameras in 4K/8-Megapixel Resolution if you want Facial Recognition and to read License Plates. Buy Day/Night, Weatherproof, Vandal-Resistant Cameras.  Buy current technology at never seen before price points.

If you’re afraid of having your Network Video Recorder (NVR) (Storage) stolen, then don’t have it installed on your coffee table, entertainment center, kitchen counter, or your dresser.  Have it installed out of sight.  The cameras are the deterrent, not the storage device. Protect your storage device, hide, lock it up, whatever. If you don’t know how to do any of that, talk to people who do.

AVAYA IP Office – Preferred Edition/Voicemail Pro

Preferred Edition (Voicemail Pro) is an advanced messaging and call flow application for IP Office systems.

Voicemail Pro can handle 40 (up to 250/500 on Server Edition/ Server Edition Select) simultaneous calls depending on licensing. Each user has the option of turning their voicemail on or off. When on, the system automatically answers their telephone when they are not available to take a call, plays a personal greeting, and records a message.

When a message has been left, the user will see a message-waiting lamp lit on their telephone and can press a retrieval button to collect their messages.

Voicemail Pro can also ring the user to deliver any new messages. Voicemail messages are time and date stamped and the caller’s number recorded. Voicemail Pro can be configured to delete read messages automatically, unless the user chooses to save the message permanently.

Voicemails can be collected remotely by dialing into the Voicemail Pro server. If the number the user is dialing from is recognized (home number or mobile/cell phone for example), the user will listen to their voicemail straight away. If the source number is not recognized, the user will be prompted for a mailbox number and a PIN code for that mailbox, before they can listen to their voicemail. Users have the ability to set and change their own PIN codes.

When a voicemail needs to be forwarded to other users, Voicemail Pro provides many options:

♦ Voicemails can be forwarded to another mailbox, or group of mailboxes

♦ Recipients can add their comments to the voicemail before forwarding to another mailbox or mailboxes.

♦ Voicemails can be forwarded as email WAV attachments.

All options are available in a choice of languages; both spoken voice prompts and graphical programming interfaces and have the choice of IP Office TUI and INTUITY emulation TUI.

Preferred Edition/Voicemail Pro Requires a Server. (external or UC Module in a bay of the IP500V2)

Avaya IP Office – IP500 V2

The Avaya IP Office IP500V2 is a Highly Modular Unified Communications platform designed to meet the requirements of Small and Medium Businesses.

Capabilities: the IP500 V2 supports up to 12 Expansion Modules and provides a combination of up to 384 Analog, Digital, and IP Endpoints. IP500 V2 supports up to 8 T1/PRI/E1 connections (192 T1/PRI channels or 240 E1 channels). Analog and SIP trunks are also supported

The IP500 V2 contains no moving parts such as hard drives or fans, which can fail or cause the unit to overheat.

IP Office IP500 V2 System Unit: The control unit holds the main configuration and performs the routing and switching for telephone calls and data traffic. Each control unit includes 4 slots for optional base cards to support trunk and phone extension ports.

Avaya SD Card: This card holds the firmware and other files used by the system when it starts. An Avaya System SD card is mandatory for correct system operation. The card also provides storage for embedded voicemail if that is used.

License Keys: Various features and applications require licenses in the system’s configuration. These are entered by uploading a PLDS XML file containing all the system’s licenses. The file and its licenses are specific to the unique serial number of the System SD card installed in the system.

IP500 Base Cards: The IP500 V2 control unit has slots for up to 4 IP500 base cards. These can be used to add ports for analog extensions, digital extensions, voice compression channels and other resources.

♦ IP500 Digital Station-8 Base Card

♦ IP500 Analog Phone-8 Base Card

♦ IP500 VCM-32 Base Card

♦ IP500 VCM-64 Base Card

♦ IP500 4-Port Expansion Base Card

♦ Unified Communications (UC) Module

♦ IP500 Combo Card (4 Analog Trunk, 6 Digital Station, 2 Analog Station, & 10 VCM)

Power Supplies: The IP500 control unit has an internal power supply unit. Each external expansion module is supplied with an external power supply unit. Additional power supply units may also be required for IP phones and some phone add-ons.

Power Cords: Depending on the locale, different power cords need to be ordered for each control unit, external expansion module and any phones or devices using external power supply units.

Cables: The system is designed primarily for connection to a structured cabling system using CAT5e (or better) UTP cabling. This approach allows telephone and data traffic to share the same wiring infrastructure and simplifies equipment moves.

Mounting Kits: The control unit can be used free-standing, with external expansion modules stacked above it. With optional rack mounting kits, the control unit and external expansion modules can also be rack mounted. Alternatively, with an optional wall mounting kit the IP500 control unit can be wall mounted. IP500 external expansion modules can also be wall mounted.

Phones: IP Office systems support a variety of Avaya Digital and IP phones, Analog phones, and 3rd Party SIP Endpoints.

Proactive Monitoring: The IP Office System Status Application (SSA) provides real-time diagnostics, allowing for maximum up-time and speedy resolution of potential issues. SSA also warns when system resources are reaching capacity (trunks, VCM, voice ports, etc.). Access to the SSA client can be local or remote, and historical alarms are stored on IP Office without the need for a local PC.

AVAYA – IP Office Unified Communications (UC) Module

The UC Module is an embedded server that allows Linux based IP Office applications to be run within the IP Office control unit rather than requiring separate PCs.

The Avaya IP Office UC Module is a Base Module and resides in one of the 4 bays in the front of the IP Office. The UC Module does not support a daughter card. (ATM-4 or PRI)

There are two types of card: The UC Module v2 is supported by IP Office Release 9.1 and higher. The UC Module v1 is supported for IP Office Release 8.0 Q1 2012 Service Pack or higher. Though physically different, the two types of card current support the same applications and application capacities. However, the v2 does not provide an implied Preferred Edition license and is not supplied with pre-installed software.

The Avaya IP Office UC Module Supports Voicemail Pro and or one-X Portal for IP Office applications:

♦ IP Office Users: Up to 200 users when running Voicemail Pro and one-X Portal for IP Office. More than 200 users when running just Voicemail Pro.

♦ Simultaneous one-X Portal for IP Office Users: 50.

♦ Maximum voicemail ports: Up to 20 ports when running Voicemail Pro and one-X Portal for IP Office. Up to 40 ports when running just Voicemail Pro.

♦ Small Community Network: Maximum 6 systems.

Licenses:

For both card types, an Essential Edition license is required as a pre-requisite. The voicemail server on the card also requires the system to have a Preferred Edition license.

♦ On pre-IP Office Release 10 systems the Unified Communications Module v1 grants the host system the virtual Preferred Edition license it needs for Voicemail Pro. This no longer applies for IP Office Release 10 and higher. Existing IP Office systems being upgraded to IP Office Release 10 must use the IP Office license migration process to retain the existing license.

♦ Maximum per Control Unit: 1 per control unit.

♦ IP Office Modes: Not supported in IP Office Basic Edition mode.

The Avaya IP Office UC Module eliminates the need to manage a Windows machine and maintain compatibility between Windows OS versions and Avaya IP Office software releases when using Preferred Edition Messaging (Voicemail PRO).

Video Surveillance NVR Versus DVR

The difference between an NVR and DVR is confusing to many

Network Video Recorders (NVRs) record IP Cameras

Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) record Analog/Coax Based Cameras

IP Cameras connect to an NVR directly or through a Network/PoE Switch over standard Data Cabling (CAT5e or better)

Analog Cameras connect to a DVR over Coax Cable via a BNC connector.

Video on an NVR is Encoded and Processed at the IP Camera, then Streamed to the NVR for Storage or Remote Viewing

Video on a DVR is Encoded and Processed at the DVR

A Network Video Recorders (NVR) is a Software Program that Records Video in a Digital Format to a Hard Disk, USB Flash Drive, SD Card, etc. An NVR contains no dedicated video capture hardware, but, the software usually runs on a dedicated device

A Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) has a small chip inside to Encode and Process the Analog Video into Digital Format for viewing and playback

The ONLY time you need to connect a DVR or NVR to the Internet, is IF you want to be able View the Video Remotely, or receive alerts from the system.

Network Video Recorders (NVRs) with IP Cameras support Video Resolution from 2-Megapixel up to 12-Megapixel (and higher)

deo Recorders (DVRs) with their Analog/Coax Based Cameras only support Video Resolution up 1080p

If you’re looking for Facial Recognition or License Plate numbers, then you want the Higher Resolution provided by Network Video Recorders (NVRs) and IP Cameras!
