How to Design a Video Surveillance System

The largest trend in Video Surveillance is the adoption of IP Cameras instead of Analog Cameras.

Both IP and Analog cameras are digitized for viewing and recording on computers. Analog cameras require an encoder or DVR to digitize the video, while IP cameras digitize the video inside the camera.

Here are basic topics to consider when designing a video surveillance system:

♦ Camera Location (viewing area)

♦ Cameras (Fixed or PTZ)

♦ Cameras (Color, Infrared, Thermal)

♦ Cameras (Standard Definition or Megapixel)

♦ Cameras (IP or Analog)

♦ Cameras (Cube, Bullet, Box, Dome, PTZ)

♦ Video Management System (DVR/Analog, NVR/IP, or HDVR/Hybrid/Analog/IP)

♦ Video Management Software (viewing software)

♦ Storage (Internal, Directly Attached, Network)

♦ Storage (30-days, 60-days, 90-days, ?)

♦ Video Analytics (Optimize Storage or Identify Events)

♦ Viewing (Locally from DVR/NVR, Video Wall Viewing, Remotely by PC or Mobile

♦ Recording Resolution

♦ Recording Frame Rate (6-10 Frames Per Second (FPS) = Most Common)

Pelco Video Surveillance

Pelco by Schneider Electric is a world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of video security systems and supporting equipment ideal for any industry.

From their impressive manufacturing facility located in Central California, Pelco and their responsive global network of professional sales representatives offer new technologies, products, and services that constantly confirm their position as the security industry’s premier video systems and equipment manufacturer.

Implementing a reliable video surveillance solution that will meet business needs is a considerable challenge for any organization.

Thankfully, support is available from both Pelco and their integrators to make the process easier and to increase the likelihood that the resulting system will meet expectations.

Establishing clear objectives and answers to key questions at the start of the project will make all the difference between a successful and effective solution, and a disappointing one.

Here are a few basic questions before doing any planning:

  1. What are the operational goals of the surveillance system? Any system design involves many decisions, and the first goal should be to understand what the system is intended to do.
  1. How will the system be staffed? It is very important to know at the start of the project whether the surveillance system will be monitored all the time, sometimes, or not at all. Camera control and analytics will be greatly affected by the answers here.
  1. What are the environmental conditions? Extreme heat, cold, humidity, corrosion, and high dust level conditions are important in determining what equipment can be considered for the installation. Other environmental factors are ambient light levels, the availability and reliability of existing power and network infrastructure.

The answers to these questions help determine the range of possible equipment choices.

More about Session Border Controllers

Small and Mid-sized companies are moving forward with SIP-based communications and Unified Communications (UC).

The key strategic need with SIP-based communications is for security.

A key component in the delivery of a SIP-based communications solution is the device that insures the security of SIP/VoIP connectivity when reaching beyond the companies’ data network firewall.

Data network firewalls protect a variety of traffic types, however, they are not ‘application-aware’ for SIP-based communications. The current industry best-practice for securing the network edge for SIP-based communications is implementation of a Session Border Controller (SBC) at the edge of the network

SIP Trunking and customer migration away from TDM trunking to SIP trunking continues as a major driver for implementation of SIP-based Unified Communications.

Businesses are now facing an evolving world where users are no longer confined inside their walls. Trends towards mobile access to system resources, telecommuting, and BYOD are creating the need to deliver SIP-based UC and collaborative services to remote users in a flexible yet secure manner.

Remote Workers need to access services via the Internet. Client registrations are addressed to the Session Border Controller (SBC), authenticated, and passed to the core. Client/user service profiles and information is then relayed back to the client in a secure environment that does not require a VPN access or VPN client to be installed in the user’s client device. This gives a simplified, flexible and secure access to SIP/UC services without the need for VPN for SIP communications.

A Session Border Controller is a SIP-based Unified Communications security appliance.

An SBC can serve needs at the edge for session border control, and can also solve needs for internal SIP VoIP security.

Avaya Session Border Controller

A security solution for SIP-based networks implementing unified communications applications

SIP Trunk Security: SIP trunks present a security challenge: there is vulnerability at the point where the SIP trunk connects to the public network, which can leave a business exposed to hacker attacks including spoofing, call hijacking, eavesdropping and toll fraud. In addition to potential damage to business operations, privacy and security mandates such as those for credit and health information (ie; PCI and HIPAA) require that these vulnerabilities be addressed, imposing significant financial and legal penalties for non-compliance.

VPN-less Remote Worker: Security Business customers are now facing an evolving world where users are no longer confined inside the walls of the enterprise. Trends towards mobile access to system resources, telecommuting, and BYOD are creating the need to deliver SIP-based UC and collaborative services to these remote users in a flexible yet secure manner. Avaya Session Border Controller for Enterprise delivers a new solution for this need with security in mind.

Avaya Session Border Controller for Enterprise with IP Office:

Avaya IP Office is the solution many growing businesses turn to for comprehensive, easily implemented unified communications.

With more than 300,000 systems installed worldwide, IP Office is an industry standard-bearer, delivering the communications and productivity tools today’s employees need to perform at their best.

When Avaya IP Office is implemented in conjunction with SIP trunks, the Avaya Session Border Controller for Enterprise works hand in hand to help protect against security threats.

What is Structured Cabling ?

Structured cabling is a complete system of cabling and associated hardware, that provides an overall comprehensive telecommunications infrastructure. Structured cabling provides a wide range of uses, like providing telephone service or transmitting data through a computer network. Structured cabling should not be device dependent.

Structured cabling begins at the point where the carrier or service provider terminates. This point is demarcation (demarc) point or Network Interface.

An example would be a telephone system installation, where the carrier or service provider furnishes one or more service lines. The carrier or service provider would install/terminate their service lines at demarcation (demarc) point.

The methods used to install and maintain structured cabling are regulated by standards. Standards are necessary to ensure desired system performance.

In the USA, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), along with TIA/EIA, are the responsible organizations for providing and maintaining standards and practices for structured cabling. They have published the standards to design, install, and maintain structured cabling installations.

Structured cabling installations usually include; entrance facilities (demarc), vertical and/or horizontal backbone cables, horizontal cables, work area outlets/jacks, main equipment room (MDF), IDF closets, backboards, racks/cabinets, patch panels, wire management, building ground, and more.
